For Immediate Release—2026 Mayor’s Inaugural Summer Youth Employment and Camp Project - Mayor J. Allen Joines
Mayor J. Allen Joines’ 2026 Inaugural Summer Youth Program (MSYP) will begin June 8 at 10 a.m. with a three-day workplace training session.
These sessions are designed for youth ages 16–18 who will participate in job placement opportunities.
Youth ages 11–15 are encouraged to register for summer camp programs offered by the City of Winston-Salem Recreation and Parks Department, Salvation Army Youth Camp (2100 Reynolds Park Blvd., phone number: 336-788-6563), and other community-based summer camps.
The program continues to grow as supporters and sponsors join Mayor Joines in his efforts to provide job opportunities, financial assistance for summer camps, workshops, and enrichment programs.

The initiative is designed to prepare youth to become productive citizens, strengthen relationships with family and peers, and develop conflict resolution skills. Participants will also engage in creative activities, including art and healing projects.
Youth participating in the summer employment program will receive training in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics), financial literacy, career exploration, conflict resolution, mental health, and overall well-being.
Participants will benefit from consistent mentoring and coaching throughout the program.
Eligibility requirements
- Be a resident of the City of Winston-Salem.
- Be willing to attend and actively participate in all programming activities, meetings, and training sessions, including the end-of-summer celebration.
- Youth ages 11–15 may be eligible for financial assistance for camp fees and stipends for participation.
Key dates for youth ages 16–18
- Applications are being accepted now through Friday, June 5, at 5 p.m.

- Workforce development training sessions will take place:
- Monday, June 8
- Tuesday, June 9
- Wednesday, June 10
- Training sessions will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily.
- Morning snacks and lunch will be provided.
- Locations will be confirmed with participants.
Participants selected for employment placement will work during June and July 2026.

Participants may be placed in a variety of roles, including:
- Community events and projects
- General maintenance
- Arts and crafts support
- Retail, restaurant, and bakery operations
- Clerical and office assistance
