When communities come together, everyone thrives
Every July, Disability Pride Month celebrates the achievements, contributions, and leadership of people with disabilities while recognizing the importance of creating communities where everyone has the opportunity to belong.
At United Way of Greater Charlotte, we believe our communities are strongest when every person can fully participate in work, school, neighborhood life, and the experiences that help people thrive. Building that future starts by removing barriers, increasing access, and ensuring every voice is valued.
Disability is a natural part of the human experience. Yet for many individuals and families, barriers to employment, transportation, healthcare, housing, education, and community participation continue to create unnecessary challenges. These obstacles are often not caused by a person’s disability, but by environments and systems that were not designed with everyone in mind.

Creating more inclusive communities is not the responsibility of one organization alone. It happens when nonprofits, businesses, schools, healthcare providers, local leaders, volunteers, donors, and residents work side by side toward a shared goal. Every partnership, every volunteer, and every act of generosity helps create opportunities that make our region stronger.
Across Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Union, and Anson counties, United Way of Greater Charlotte brings people and resources together to strengthen local nonprofits, connect residents with essential services, and support solutions that help communities thrive. By investing in organizations and initiatives that expand opportunity, we help create a future where everyone has the chance to succeed.
Many of our nonprofit partners work every day to increase accessibility and inclusion by providing advocacy, employment support, education, family services, healthcare, recreation, and other critical resources for people with disabilities. Their work reminds us that inclusion is not simply about access. It is about ensuring every person is welcomed, respected, and empowered to contribute their unique strengths.
Disability Pride Month also invites each of us to consider how we can make our own communities more welcoming. Whether it is advocating for accessible spaces, using inclusive communication, supporting organizations that champion disability inclusion, or simply listening to the lived experiences of others, every action helps create a stronger community.
This month, we celebrate the resilience, leadership, talents, and accomplishments of people with disabilities across our region. Their experiences strengthen our neighborhoods, workplaces, schools, and communities every day.
When communities come together, barriers become opportunities, challenges become solutions, and everyone has the chance to thrive.
Together, we can continue strengthening nonprofits, neighborhoods, and lives because a community where everyone belongs is a community that is stronger for us all.
